Building the Infrastructure Behind America’s Critical Technologies

Published

In Monroeville, Elmhurst helped deliver one of the region’s most sophisticated engineering and operations facilities—a secure, highly-specialized environment built to support Bechtel Plant Machinery, Inc. (BPMI). As a division that helps power the Navy’s submarines and aircraft carriers, BPMI requires a workplace capable of supporting advanced engineering teams, stringent security needs, and round-the-clock technical performance. Elmhurst and PenTrust partnered to build and operate a 269,000-square-foot specialized facility designed specifically for that mission.

Purpose-Built for High-Consequence Work

Bechtel Plant Machinery Inc's (BPMI) work requires more than traditional Class-A office space. It demands infrastructure that can support secure processes, specialized computing needs, technical testing, high-density engineering teams, and rapid response workflows. Elmhurst approached the project with one goal: create a facility that elevates national-critical work, supports BPMI’s people, and ensures reliability for decades.

At the heart of the building is the NNTL Lab—a high-tech computing environment with independent cooling, redundant power, dedicated security protocols, and operational isolation. This space alone required extensive coordination between Elmhurst, PenTrust, and BPMI engineers to ensure that every detail aligned with mission-critical standards.

Spaces Designed for Teams Who Build the Future

Beyond technical spaces, Elmhurst invested in creating an environment that supports BPMI’s 1,300 employees across collaboration, training, and daily operations. The campus includes:

  • A 500-seat auditorium, divisible into thirds for flexible training, project updates, or large-scale engineering briefings.
  • A full-service kitchen and break area, designed to support the facility’s large population and long work cycles.
  • Independent meeting suites, giving project teams secure breakout space.
  • A fitness center capable of accommodating 30 users at once, supporting employee wellness in a high-intensity work environment.
  • An outdoor pavilion and walking trail, designed to provide space for decompression and informal team connection.

These amenities reinforce Elmhurst’s belief that exceptional work is possible only when people have the environment to collaborate, think, and recharge.

A Long-Term Partnership With National Impact

Bechtel Plant Machinery, Inc. plays a vital role in national security, nuclear propulsion, and advanced engineering—fields that demand stability, long-term planning, and tailored infrastructure. Elmhurst’s partnership ensures BPMI operates in a facility designed not just to meet today’s requirements, but to evolve with tomorrow’s technologies.

This project underscores Elmhurst’s core investment philosophy: build with discipline, partner with purpose, and support organizations shaping America’s future.

“Facilities like this make critical national work possible—and it’s our responsibility to build them with precision and trust.”

Outcomes

  • Delivered a 260,000 square foot purpose-built facility supporting BPMI’s highly specialized operations.
  • Enabled secure computing, engineering, and testing environments with dedicated infrastructure.
  • Provided collaborative, flexible, and wellness-focused amenities for 1,300 employees.
  • Strengthened Pittsburgh’s advanced engineering ecosystem, supporting high-wage technical jobs.
  • Created a long-term partnership with a national defense contractor with global impact.

What This Means for Pittsburgh’s Future

BPMI’s presence in the region underscores the importance of pairing advanced industry with disciplined, long-term real estate investment. The facility supports national security, empowers high-skilled talent, and adds depth to Pittsburgh’s engineering economy—and Elmhurst is proud to be part of that mission.
